Deacon Ordination Service

Deacon Ordination Service
Sunday, Feb. 5th, 2006 11 a.m.
Paul Fineburg and Vernie Sullivan Selected to Serve as Deacons
On Sunday, January 22nd the membership of Martin Bluff Baptist Church unanimously selected Vernie Sullivan and Paul Fineburg to serve as deacons. Paul will be ordained or “set apart by the laying on of hands” in the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, February 5th. Vernie Sullivan, who was ordained as a deacon in 1968 at the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, will be installed during the worship service.

Both men meet the Scriptural criteria to hold the office and perform the ministry of deacon as found in
1 Timothy 3:8-13:
Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.
11In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.
12A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well. 13Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Plan now to participate in the Deacon Ordination Service. Pastor Eric Smith will preach the charge to the deacon candidate and the congregation. His message is entitled:The Greatest are the Servants. Jesus said, The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:11-12
